Overview

Grade 316/316L is probably the second most common used commercial grade of stainless steel supplied into numerous industry sectors. It has excellent corrosion resistance in ordinary atmospheric conditions, but also has excellent corrosive resistance to more arduous environments such as salt water and environments where resistance to chloride corrosion is required. Whilst performing well when exposed to relatively high temperatures, this grade of stainless steel like most austenitic stainless grades also maintains its strength and toughness at sub-zero temperatures, making this an excellent choice for various applications and industries sectors such as oil & gas, water treatment, petrochemical and construction. 316/316L is easily machined and easy to weld.

Corrosion Resistance

316/316L stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance at normal temperatures in ordinary atmospheric conditions withstanding some natural acids, chlorine and chloride. In more corrosive environments a Duplex grade may be a more suitable option for extra protection against pitting and crevice corrosion.
